He has accepted a residency in internal medicine atBrigham and Womens Hospital. Medical school is a transformative and unique experience. Students begin with very little clinical knowledge and a vast body of material to master. By the end of their fourth year, however, they are confident in their clinical abilities and prepared to tackle the challenges of an internship. Below is a day in the life of a medical student during the pre-clinical (traditionally years one and two) and clinical years (three and four). Note, however, that each medical schools schedule is unique. The Pre-Clinical Years 8:00-9:00 a.m.: Wake up at the last possible moment, frantically shower, dress, and eat a poor approximation of breakfast before you drive to school (despite understanding the metabolic basis of why breakfast really is important). 9:00-9:50 a.m.: Attend your first lecture of the day. If you are a first-year medical student, lectures likely cover basic biomedical topics like anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, and neuroscience. If you are a second-year medical student, lectures typically describe diseases according to organ systems (e.g. pulmonary, gastrointestinal, or cardiovascular). 9:50-10:00 a.m.: Realize your breakfast was insufficient. Scramble to the campus cafeteria to purchase a snack, along with almost every medical students true best frienda cup of coffee. 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: Listen to two lectures back-to-back. Absorb as many details as possible about disease epidemiology, symptoms, physical exam findings, laboratory results, imaging, and treatment modalities. 12:00-1:00 p.m.: Ah, lunchtime. If this is a particularly intense week (i.e. final exams), you may consider heading to the library to review your notes. Otherwise, you spend an hour eating with friends. 1:00-4:00 p.m.: The remainder of your day is variable, depending upon your schools specific curriculum. You may dissect cadavers in the anatomy laboratory, work through patient presentations in small groups, examine slides for cell biology and/or microbiology, log early clinical exposure seeing patients with a mentor, or attend additional lectures. The Clinical Years Your schedule (and life) during years three and four can vary dramatically depending on your clinical clerkship (family or internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, etc.). The outline below is reflective of a non-surgical inpatient rotation (like internal medicine). 6:00-7:00 a.m.: Wake up at the last possible moment, frantically shower, dress (including your white coat!), and eat a poor approximation of breakfast before you drive to the hospital. 7:00-8:00 a.m.: As a clinical student (or clerk), you have responsibilities and expectations at the hospital. Before your supervising resident arrives, you complete your initial rounds. You visit with your patientsusually from one to five individuals. You ask them how they are feeling, examine them, update them on their status, review their chart and lab work, and enter your note into their medical record, along with your assessment and proposed plan. As a student, you have fewer patients to follow than the residents have, so you devote extra time and care to each patient. Patients sometimes even view you as their doctor on the team. 8:00-9:00 a.m.: Now that your supervising resident is present, you see your patients once again. This time, your resident does the majority of the examining, either confirming or denying your earlier findings. You discuss your assessment and plan with your resident, and you change your note, if need be. 9:00-11:00 a.m.: The attending (who is a faculty member) arrives, and you begin rounds as a team. The team (attending, resident, medical students, and sometimes nurses and/or pharmacists) sees all of the patients they are caring for one-by-one. As the team reaches your patients rooms, you present your findings, impressions, and proposed treatment strategies to the attending physician. This is where the majority of teaching occurs. The attending questions you regarding your patients illnessin front of the entire teamand expects you to give your best answer. Several questions will be well beyond your current knowledge level, but the attending will be sure to educate you on these topics. As a clinical student, you may realize that you learn far better when correlating information to a patient you are caring for, rather than passively taking knowledge in as you did in your pre-clinical years. 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: You finish writing and/or editing your notes, and you assist your resident with any miscellaneous tasks that must be done in order to help your patients improve. 12:00-1:00 p.m.: Lunch! Occasionally, there will be departmental educational conferences during this hour that include free food. This is also an excellent opportunity to refresh your coffee mug. 1:00-5:00 (or 6:00, or 7:00, etc.) p.m.: Depending on your rotation and whether or not your team is on call, you will be dismissed early or late in the day. If your team is not on call, you will work with your resident to follow up on patients who need to remain in the hospital. You will also help to discharge patients who are ready to leave. If your team is on call, you will continue to monitor patients, as well as participate in consultations and new admissions. The transformation students experience during medical school is nothing short of amazing. We often start our journey nave and optimistic. The massive amount of information we must commit to memory occasionally overwhelms us. Many times, medical students struggle with frustration and intimidation as they go through the seemingly never-ending pre-clinical years. Students may think about their peers who graduated college and started lucrative careers. However, once we reach the clinical years, we are often rejuvenated; we finally learn what it is like to be a physician. We begin to make clinical decisionsfirst timidly, then assertively. Yes, a day in the life of a medical student can be rough. We are burdened with debt, and we are at the bottom of the proverbial totem pole but we begin to realize why we chose medicine in the first place. It is not about getting rich quickly, it is not about prestige, and it is not about feeling like you are on top of the world. Bryophytes: They are primitive land plants .They include liver worts and mosses. Plant body is a gametophyte and bear antheridia and archegonia. The sporophyte is reduced. It reproduces asexually by means of spores which again give rise to gametophyte. Pteridophytes: They are vascular but seedless plants. They possess root, stem and leaves. The plant body is a sporophyte; it reproduces asexually by spores produced inside sporangia. The spore on germination produces prothallus which is the gametophyte which produces antheridium and archegonia on them and reproduces sexually to form the sporophyte. Gymnosperms: Seed bearing plants, do not produce flowers. Plant body is a sporophyte. Reproduction occurs by producing male and female cones. Angiosperms: They are called flowering plants and constitute the most advanced and highly successful group. They produce seeds which are enclosed in fruits.

(Source: ni19680)This majestic and historic monument has a recognisable entry that opens onto the Liberty Square, then you have to climb 89 steps (representing the age of the Chiang Kai-Shek when he died) to reach the bronze statue of the man himself.If you want to know more about the history of Taiwan and Chiang Kai-shek, the man who led the counterrevolutionary and nationalist civil war against the communist power of Beijing, you have to visit this site. It’s an icon of independence and nationalism against the Communist Party of China and its repeated attempts to unify Taiwan with mainland China.  The roof was designed with a style reminiscent of the roof of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.Find out more about why you should visit Taiwan.Lungshan TempleThe Buddhist temples represent Chinese culture and tradition.  There are plenty of temples and Lungshan Temple is one of the highlights.This is one of the most important temples in Taiwan and was built between 1919 and 1924 on the site of a former temple from 1738.The Taipei 101 TowerPreviously the world’s tallest tower, the Taipei 101 is 509-metres tall and can be seen from almost anywhere in Taipei.  It’s a symbol of technological development and Asian tradition.The tower was built between 1999 and 2004 and includes shops, offices, and observation decks on the 88th, 89th, and 91st floors. You’ll be treated to incredible views of the city, the surrounding mountains, the South China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.Xiangshan (Elephant Mountain)After enjoying some of the local cuisine, dumplings, xiaolongbao, soup, noodles, etc., and exploring the museums and the parks, it’s time to head to Xiangshan, the Elephant Mountain, in the southeast of Taipei.A short walk will take you to an incredible view of the city, with the Taipei 101 tower against a backdrop of tropical vegetation.  Go there at sunset to get the most recognisable picture of Taipei.You should be aware that Xiangshan can get very busy on Saturday afternoons.Taiwanese Night MarketsYou can’t visit Taiwan and the capital city without eating in one of the famous night markets.Every evening, in every neighbourhood, a street comes alive as the night markets become a centre of life, eating, and conversation.Tourists rub shoulders with the local Taiwanese population.  It’s a good opportunity to use that Chinese you’ve been learning!  The Raohe, Shilin, and Liaoning night markets are some of the best.If you go to Taiwan, you have to go to a night market! (Source: cegoh)The City of TainanTainan literally means “Taiwan south”.  Unsurprisingly, you can find it in the south of Taiwan. It was founded by the Dutch in 1602 as a trading post when the island was under their control.It was the capital of Taiwan under the Qing Dynasty until 1887.It’s the capital of religion (for Buddhists), cuisine, history and culture. Tainan is home to many Taoist and Buddhist temples, some dating back to the 17th century.  It’s a veritable open-air museum. The City of Jiufen is now a picturesque tourist town built into the side of the hills and is very popular.Away from the cities, there are some wonderful natural sites in Taiwan. (Source: sharonang)You can get there from Taipei by train (to Ruifang), then take the bus. You’ll probably want to go early to avoid the crowds.Visit the old town whose maze-like roads twist and turn at every opportunity. There are also souvenir shops, small restaurants, and tea stalls on Jishan Street and Shuqi Road.  You can then head up Teapot Mountain, one of the best places to walk in Taiwan.  This is an easy walk with many nice views of the ocean from the summit.Taroko GorgeTake the train to Hualien to enjoy the tropical vegetation and the Taroko Gorge. It’d be a shame to miss such a wonderful natural sight.The gorge, which is located in Taroko National Park, offers sublime views and a number of hikes for all abilities.  You can enjoy the Shakadang Trail or Swallow Grotto in less than an hour if you’re not very experienced.You can also enjoy the Qingshui Cliff that descends into the turquoise ocean. On the Shakadang Trail, for example, you’ll follow the path carved by the clear and turquoise waters.The Yanzikou Trail leads you across the bridge over the river and along to the Eternal Spring Shrine, a coloured shrine in the side of the hills where you can enjoy views of the mountains and fall.Find out more about accommodation in Taiwan.Sun Moon LakeTo the southeast of Taichung, in Nantou County, is one of Taiwan’s unmissable destinations, Sun Moon Lake, a lake that was said to be formed when the sun and the moon surrounded the mountains.Sun Moon Lake is a great place for a romantic stroll. (Source: JasonLye)While the shape of the lake resembles neither the sun nor the moon, it really doesn’t matter because it’s just so beautiful.  Unsurprisingly, this is one of the most popular tourist destinations. However, you can still find a quiet spot.You can do a tour of the lake on a bike, hike in the surrounding mountains, or learn more about the indigenous Austronesian culture of Taiwan.Find out more about the best time to visit Taiwan.Kenting National ParkKenting National Park is a must if it’s raining in the north and you need some sunshine.Looking for beautiful sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and places to walk?Kenting National Park isn’t just for hikers or those who want to spend the day eating and drinking in Hengchun Old Town.  You can also visit the Eluanbi Lighthouse, see the Formosan rock macaques, or walk through a mini canyon full of little caves.In terms of beaches, you can also enjoy deserted beaches.  Don’t miss Baisha Beach, either. While this beach is rarely deserted, it is one of Taiwan’s most popular.  There’s also little risk of typhoons or monsoons in Kenting National Park.If you'd like to learn some Chinese before you visit Taiwan, you could consider enlisting the help of one of the many talented tutors on Superprof!
